05TEL053-922-3300Early last century, a curious young man was growing up in Yamahigashi in Tenryu-ku (formerly Komyo-mura, Iwata-gun) in the northern part of Hamamatsu. At that time, cars were a rare sight in Japan, and when one appeared in his village, he chased after it. When he heard there was going to be an air show, he somehow managed to ride an adult-sized bicycle 20km to where it was being held. His name was Soichiro Honda. His intelligence as an engineer led him to invent a number of items, and within his lifetime, built Honda into the global car manufacturer it is today. A building that commemorates Soichiro Honda is being built in his old home town. This shows him as a child in the village and the episodes from his youth that spurred him towards craftsmanship, to his leaving auto repair and taking on the challenge of manufacturing piston rings, on the way acquiring 28 patents, and in the process being dubbed "Japan's Edison. He invented a motorized bicycle nicknamed the "batabata" that used a cast-off small generator engine for a wireless radio, and at one time 7 out of 10 motorcycles in Japan were manufactured in Hamamatsu. The story of the "Super Cub", and water-cooled engines that defied the norm. These booths present Soichiro's philosophy of craftsmanship; namely that "success represents the 1% of your work which results from the 99% that is called failure". His tenacious spirit continued to confront the challenge of achieving a dream that everybody said was impossible. Here you'll find Soichiro, not a "genius engineer", instead a genius "man of passion". Look into the soul of a man who devoted his whole life to the pursuit of craftsmanshipIn the footsteps of a genius "man of passion"Upon entering, you will see Soichiro's large left hand. The panel shows his countless scars from being cut with a cutter, crushed with a hammer, and pierced with drills. It is inscribed with the words "it is exactly because of the sacrifices of my left hand that I have succeeded." ■Hours: 10:00 - 16:30■Closed: Mondays, Tuesdays (Wednesdays when either or both days are public holidays)December 29-January 3■Admission: Free (Exception for special displays)■Parking: 45 cars1112 Futamata Futamata-cho Tenryu-ku, Hamamatsu 431-3314"My hands speak"Soichiro Honda Craftsmanship CenterMotorc& C
