Musical instruments08A countless number of tonesJapan's first public music museum has its origins in Hamamatsu's preeminent role as a manufacturer of musical instruments. Major makers are “Yamaha” and “Kawai”, two instrument manufacturers prominent on the world stage, who have their roots in outstanding technical innovation. Torakusu Yamaha, the man who went on to found Yamaha was asked to repair an organ while in Hamamatsu. Given this opportunity, he analyzed how it worked and studied music, and eventually created an organ that was the equal of any import. In 1900, he succeeded in producing Japan's first piano. At that time, Koichi Kawai was the engineer in charge of the piano's action, which is core to its functionality, and he would later go on to form his own company. The museum displays the actual organ made by Torakusu. What’s more, the world's first piano which you can hear played in the museum was restored by Kawai personnel. With over 1,200 exhibits, this is the largest collection of musical instruments in East Asia. Take a walk through the forest of instruments, and be surprised by the wealth of sounds, ways to play, and shapes of instruments from around the world. You can not help but be moved by the primordial bond between people and music. People can not fully express emotions merely with facial expressions and words, and it is probably for this reason they made music, which may be likened to another language. You will come to understand this on your journey through the space that is music. The symbol of Hamamatsu, the birthplace of world-famous music brands. A demonstration of exhibited instruments is held every day on the hour from 10AM to 4PM. The main feature is a performance on a piano still as it was at the time it was invented. Only three of these instruments remain. This newly-restored piano offers listeners the chance to experience their wonderful sound. The first piano tones in the world
